Organizations engaged in measurement programs often pursue standardization of data in order to facilitate easier comparisons; or, they will adjust the criteria for what "counts" against their scorecard or data dashboard. But reducing complex processes or efforts to the simplest measures yields misleading data. Much is lost in the process of standardization, and so the quality of information may be significantly degraded.
